Pura Gunung Kawi, located in the serene village of Tampaksiring, Bali, is one of the island’s most ancient and significant archaeological sites. Dating back to the 11th century, Gunung Kawi Temple is believed to have been constructed during the reign of King Udayana of the Warmadewa dynasty. The complex consists of ten rock-cut candi (shrines), each standing around 7 meters high, carved into the cliff face. These shrines are thought to be memorials dedicated to the king and his family.
The name "Gunung Kawi" translates to "Mountain of Poetry," reflecting the ancient Balinese tradition of combining art and spirituality. The temple complex serves as a poignant reminder of Bali's historical and religious heritage, showcasing the island’s early Hindu influences.

Upon arriving at the temple area, you need to pay the parking fee. The cost is IDR 2,000 for motorcycles and IDR 5,000 for cars. Please park your vehicle in the existing parking lot or the place directed by the resident on duty.
Buy an entry ticket at the ticket booth located near the entrance. The ticket prices are displayed on a table at the booth. Remember to bring your ticket so you can hand it in to the inspection officer.
Present your ticket to the inspection staff. Here, you will be provided with a sash or sarong to wear if you are not already dressed appropriately for entering the temple premises. The cost of borrowing the sash or sarong is included in the ticket price, so there is no additional payment required.
Proceed to explore the temple site. Because you are entering a sacred area, obey the existing rules (whether written or based on ethics). Once you have finished your visit, return the borrowed sash or sarong to the designated area before leaving. If you wish, you can donate to improve tourism services. Residents who work there do not receive salaries or payments. Ticket sales go into state revenue, and the temple there gets a share of around thirty-five percent for carrying out religious events and temple repairs. Local residents work there in turns in return for the money given by the state to our temple.
Prices are determined by the tourism department. Fees include the cost of borrowing a scarf or sarong to enter the temple. The temple is open from 7 am to 6 pm for tourist activities.
